USO Girl - Captain America: The First Avenger

I kept seeing pictures of these super cute costumes and finally broke down and made myself one.  I followed the instructions Kathy set up on the Facebook, Captain America Dancing Girls, and this was one of the quickest costumes ever.  Anyone is welcome to join the group (message them on the fan page linked above to gain access to the construction page) and meet up with others at conventions around the world.  All information on the construction page is for personal use only.

Started - June 2012
First Worn - San Diego Comic Con (2012)

Reference pics

The first one is from the movie and the second is from a promo for the movie.  Because of access to information at the time, the Facebook group focused on the promo girls but information for the movie variations is there too.

Final costume pics

The last two were taken off of Facebook and I'm not sure who took the middle one but the last one was Eurobeat Kasumi Photography.

Pulling it all together

June 18, 2012

I just ordered everything for a new costume!  I bought the fabric this past weekend after car shopping and now all the other stuff has been ordered.  For how small this costume is, there is a lot to it.  Gloves, flag, tights, stars, millinery supplies, shoes...  I still need to find earrings but they're not strictly necessary so I'm not too concerned.  Now to get the muslin going and get the dress all sewn up so I can work on the hat as soon as the buckram arrives.  I'm a bit behind as I was hoping to get a lot of the dress done this past weekend but I didn't realize when I was making plans that car shopping was needed.

The hat is ready for satin!  I got the frame put together and glued on the felt and it's ready for the satin layer!  I'm rather excited.  Of course, I want to make the mockup of the dress before I cut out the satin to make sure that I don't cut it out wrong so I think I might be stuck for awhile.  But that just means I get to move on to the dress.

My dog tried eating my hat.  He already tried eating my roll of millinery wire.  He also tried eating my makeup that I purchased just for this costume.  I'm starting to get the feeling he doesn't want me making this costume.

Time to clean the apartment.  Hmmm...actually that's not what I mean.  Time to shove everything that the dog could possibly eat into the storage room since that door is shut all the time and he would have to eat through the door to get in there.  Not that I'm putting it past him but I think it's likely we would notice before he made it through.

The red panels of the skirt are all sewn and I'm ready to start the white.  The bodice is ready for twill tape (not part of the directions but I can't seem to keep myself from over-engineering every single costume I make) and the hat is ready for sequin fabric.  It looks like a meetup at ComicCon is not really happening (or it's happening when I can't make it) so I'm not frantically trying to get it done in time.  It would be nice but I'm not going to rush.  However, it might end up being my gala dress for Costume College just because I'm not sure what else to wear and at least it's new and sparkly.

And because I feel the need to document Koko's need to be involved with every project...

The hat is sequinned!  Need to attach the star and finish the lining but the sequins are done!

And because I couldn't resist (and it makes it harder for Koko to throw up on...), I put the various pieces on Anna and while it may look like it's almost there, it's all in pieces.  The bodice edges need to be finished, the skirt isn't attached, the petti isn't done...  But I'm liking the way it looks.  =)

And the hat is done!

July 10, 2012

This dress would have been done by now but I decided to over-engineer it - flatlined the bodice and added twill tape.  Also, I decided to make the petticoat in the chiffon version.  Oh yeah, and I decided to make my own bias tape so it would be satin and I wouldn't have to buy a ton of the Wright's bias.  But I love the way the petti turned out and it is done - finally!!

Left to do - attach the skirt, attach the petticoat, catchstitch neckline, put in zipper, sew lining, and attach lining.  And then there's still the cummerbund and lapels.  And I really should try styling my hair appropriately before the day of.  But I got my shoes back and the soles are good to go.  Progress is being made.  Still not sure if it's going to be enough to get it done for Saturday but it will totally be done for Dragon*Con!

August 2, 2012

I did mostly finish the USO girl costume in time for Saturday!  I may have been sewing the lapels on Thursday while in lines but I got to wear it!  It needed snaps for the lapels and after looking at some pics, I decided it needed a bit of altering.  Both are done and it's ready for D*Con now!  And nope, didn't get a chance to try out my hair before the day of.  I did find out that I should ignore the curling instructions though.  My hair stayed curly-ish but it was pretty flat for me.  My hair curls if I look at it wrong, mostly it curls wrong but it does curl and stays curled.  Not so much that day.  Going to try it out again before D*Con though and hopefully it works better.

And I totally want to make another.  I'm thinking the blue skirt variant would be great fun...
